Graduate Student Scholarships
Below are all scholarship and grant opportunities for U of U Geology & Geophysics Graduate Students.
Department Scholarships
Former students of Professor Chapman have established the David S. Chapman and Inga M. Chapman Fund to support unique educational and research opportunities. Educational opportunities for students supported by this fund may include research visits to collaborative labs; attendance at focused workshops, short-courses, and conferences; opportunities that broaden a student’s international experience; and opportunities to participate in collaborative field studies and research cruises. The fund does not support attendance at regular society meetings or conferences. This fund is intended to support both graduate and undergraduate students.
Graduate and undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Geology and Geophysics.
Applications will be received normally two times a year, on September 13 and February 14.
Proposals for unique, time-sensitive opportunities can be accepted on a rolling basis; please communicate your intention for an off-cycle proposal to the chair of Graduate or Undergraduate Affairs prior to submitting your proposal.
By the deadline, applications from graduate students should be emailed to the Graduate Affairs chair, Dr. Fan-Chi Lin, fanchi.lin@utah.edu; applications from undergraduate students should be emailed to the Undergraduate Affairs chair, Dr. Peter Lippert, pete.lippert@utah.edu.
Applications should be submitted as a single pdf document and include the following:
- Title of the project/opportunity and name of person applying.
- A one-page description that includes:

- The planned activity/opportunity;
- How the activity fits into the applicant’s studies, research, or professional development; and
- Likely impact of the opportunity on the applicant’s studies/career.

- An itemized budget with a brief justification of expenses.
- Signature of a sponsoring faculty member on the proposal indicating support.
- A two-page CV (NSF style: see the following link for guidelines and examples: https://adai.uw.edu/grants/nsf_biosketch_template.pdf).
Award levels of up to $1500 can be expected; larger requests will be reviewed in special circumstances. Contributing or matching funds from other sources are not required but will be considered a positive aspect of an application.
College of Science Scholarships
The College of Science PhD Candidate Emergency scholarship fund can provide financial support when an unexpected medical event creates immediate financial hardship.

University of Utah Scholarships
This Graduate School award provides supplemental funding for continuing graduate students to participate in professional development and career preparation activities. Visit the award website for detailed instructions on eligibility, application deadlines, and how to apply.
The Graduate Student Professional Development Supplement Award is designed to support continuing graduate students in their individual professional development as scholars, researchers, and leaders. Professional development activities may include conferences or skill-building workshops, fine arts masterclasses, or juried performance competitions, for example, that support scholarly goals and career preparation.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis within the noted deadlines below. This supplemental award provides up to $300 to support expenses associated with an individual professional development activity. Should the proposed professional development activity include travel, the award may be up to $500.
This award is a supplement and requires other program, college, or university support up to or exceeding the amount of the Graduate School supplementary award. For example, if a workshop costs $400, the Graduate School will provide a supplementary award of up to $200, provided that another university funding source covers the initial $200 or more.
- Actively enrolled as a continuing University of Utah graduate student (first-year graduate students not eligible)
- United States citizen or legally present in the United States
- Engaging in an individual professional development activity with qualifying expenses that is financially supported by a university funding source
Allowable expenses can include activity registration fees, abstract fee, airfare/car mileage, lodging, and ground transportation.
Non-allowable expenses include meals, per diem, society membership fees, Concur report processing fee, and car rentals.
- Have not already received the Graduate Student Professional Development Supplement Award in the past.
This is a one-time award, meaning graduate students are only eligible to receive this award once during their graduate career. The award can only be applied to one professional development activity.
Applications that are incomplete or submitted outside of the allowable application window will not be reviewed.
Funding for the Graduate Student Professional Development Supplement Award is limited and submitted applications from eligible applicants are not guaranteed funding from the Graduate School.

External Scholarships
The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. A goal of the program is to broaden participation of the full spectrum of diverse talents in STEM. The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support inclusive of an annual stipend of $37,000.
Professional organizations often offer scholarships and fellowships. We recommend looking through the list to see if any apply to you.
Travel Scholarships
Currently enrolled students of the University of Utah are eligible to request up to $600 towards certain travel related expenses. Requests are limited to one trip per student per year. These funds support students with opportunities that enhance experiences here at the U. The ASUU Finance Director, the traveling-student’s College Student Council, and the ASUU Travel Committee review all travel requests.

U of U Financial Wellness Center (FWC)
The FWC is a resource for students to assist them in making smart, informed decisions about their money. Whether students are struggling to make ends meet or whether their finances are in pretty good shape, there is always room to improve one’s financial situation. The FWC was created to help students in a safe, competent and confidential atmosphere with one-hour consultations to address their financial concerns. They are located in the Olpin Student Union Building Room 317.
