Earth Science Minor

If you are interested in learning more about your planet, consider minoring in Earth Sciences. The Earth Sciences curriculum comprises core courses on earth systems and history. Students then complete electives from a range of options, including geologic hazards, sustainable energy, paleontology and geobiology, and oceanography.

  1. Required Courses:
    1. GEO1100 - Evolving Earth
    2. GEO2500 - Wasatch in the Field
  2. Earth at least 6 credits from the following:
    1. GEO100 - Earth Science in the Cinema
    2. GEO1040 - The World of Dinosaurs
    3. GEO1050 - National Parks: Geology Behind the Scenery
    4. GEO1110 - Introduction to Earth Systems
    5. GEO1115 - Laboratory for Introduction to Earth Systems
    6. GEO2100 - Reactive Earth (highly recommended as it is a prerequisite for many 3000+ level classes.)
  3. Earn at least 6 credits from Geo 3000-5999

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex geoscience problems by applying principles of, science, and mathematics. Simplify open-ended problems using a systems approach to produce sustainable outcomes.
  • An ability to apply geoscience knowledge to produce understanding that meet(s) specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences. Written and spoken communication with effective visualization
  • Ability to recognize ethical, professional responsibilities in geoscience consulting and make informed judgements, which must consider the impact of geoscience solutions in global, economic, environmental, societal, context.
  • An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use geoscience judgement to draw conclusions. Think in four dimensions
  • An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

If you are looking to get involved, consider serving on a departmental committee or completing an undergraduate research project with a faculty member (GEO3900) or internship with an off-campus organization (GEO5900) for credit toward your minor; there are many opportunities for students to earn credit and receive funding for undergraduate research. 

Upon completion of the minor, you will be eligible for careers in geosciences, environmental science, research, or education. With additional education at the graduate level, students can also become professional geologists, consultants, or geological engineers in the public and private sector, museum professionals, or teachers and professors.
